Johannes Schefferus (1621—1677) professor of eloquence and politics at Uppsala, appointed “professor honorariiis juris naturae et gentium" in 1665. Schefferus, who came to Uppsala from Strasshiirg in 1647, became the founder of classical philology in Sweden. He also wrote about Swedish antiquities, ethnolog)' and the art of painting, among other tilings. In addition to all this, he developed a system of his own on natural law, where he tried to reconcile different opinions among contemporary theorists in order to provide his students with a usuable doctrine of the subject. Schefferus’ SciagrapJjid juris naturae was never printed but was spread in manuscripts and had substantial influence on the teaching of natural law during the rest of the 17th century.
