lljcfactors that influenced the discussion in the 1940’s and i9>"o’s The toniiatix e tacrors can, troni an anah rical porspccri\ c, he di\ ided into two niajor groups, fhe first group consists of the unicr factors \\cxtinent to the law faculties, fhese were niter alia the existing curriculuin and exam structure, the growing nuniher ot students and the scarcity of professors, the failed recruitment of research students and the obstacles in the professional academic career. In this group of factors we also find the role of traditions in the law faculties. In the second group we find the outer factors, 'fhese factors include ideological, legal, social and economic factors; inter alia factors such as the accelerating tempo in the legislati\ e process, especialh’ in the social and administratix e sectors and the on-going reform of the procedural s\’stem. 'The growth of the Swedish welfare s\ stem was of course the dominant outer factor and it included the new social, economic and legal structure of the Swedish societt, in short the re-shaping of the traditional Swedish societ\’. But the ongoing reformof the Swedish law of procedure during the 1940’s was perhaps the single most important outer formatixe factor during the period. I'his reform - and its farreaching effect on the legal professions - especialK' put the legal education in focus. Both academics and practitioners had to relate to this new realitx. In some cases it is difficult to identifx a factor as distincth inner or distincth outer and such is the case w ith legal science. Legal science has phu ed an influential role in the de\ elofunent of the structure of legal education hut the de\ elopment of legal science and its domithe ideological tendency and finally about the purpose of the education. Should the legal education be a preparation to the professions and have highly practical orientation or should it consist of a more theoretical and systematic presentation of the legal subjects and institutions? My research project on the recent history of the Swedish legal education focus on this development and will analyse the discourse both within and outside the law faculties and study the various inner an outer formative factors that influenced the gradual change. 41^
