The value pattern of family law was almost identical across Europe. Family law in general and illegitimacy in particular were both expressions of societal structures that were predominantly traditional and religiously oriented. Secular patterns of life did not exist. Survival values dominated the everyday life of ordinary people. It seems reasonable to indicate the value dimension of illegitimacy with a star on the map.
