mª milagros cárcel ortí 473 aspert de Botonach y de Castellnouwas the fourth bishop of the diocese of Valencia following the conquest of the city on 9 October 1238 by the king of Aragón, Jaume I. Jaspert was a lawyer with a significant intellectual background, and furthermore sacristan of the cathedral of his native city of Girona and abbot of the nearby Sant Feliu de Guìxols. During the twelve years that he led the diocese of Valencia, he held two synods (1278, 1280), created the archdeaneries of Alzira and Morvedre, established five canonries, enriched for a second time the position of dean in the cathedral, and instituted two benefices there under the patronage of Saint Mary Magdalen. He made his will on 7 March 1288 in the presence of the notary, Giner Rabasa, and seven witnesses; he died on 3 April of the same year, in the episcopal palace of Valencia. The original parchment document is preserved in the Archive of Valencia Cathedral, as is its copy, written several years later, in a parchment codex containing testamentary dispositions and authorized in accord with the fueros of Valencia by the civil justice of that city. The bishop chose as his executors two archdeacons from the cathedral, three canons, and the rector of Morvedre. He wished to be buried in the cathedral, to which he also made a donation of various books, sacred vestments, and monies for anniversary commemorations and candles. He bequeathed money to convents and hospitals in Valencia, Xàtiva, and Alzira, and others for public works. He also left money to his domestics and for Christ’s poor, but was mindful of his origin in Girona: the largest part of his bequest was directed to its cathedral, to the upkeep of the church of Sant Feliu, and to the nuns of Sant Feliu de Cadins. The testament offers little information about his biological family, but much more about the members of the domus episcopi. The formulae used by the notary, the structure and dispositions of the testament, and its place within documentary traditions are also analysed. J Abstract
