testaments in premyslid bohemia the property settlement was set down in writing, and the document does not refer to any previous oral declaration. He primarily bequeathed a portion of his property to the convent in Oslavany and to his sister who served God there. Hartleb granted a sum of money (40 talents of silver) to his wife, in case she married after his death. If she remained a widow, she was to keep all of Hartleb’s estates and take care of their sons. Furthermore, he took into account his servants, the churches in his domain, and his debts. On 1 December 1282, Agnes de Amchowiz, the widow of the otherwise unknown nobleman Witlon, bequeathed in her will 90 marks of her dowry to the monastery in Chotěšov; the will, however, was sealed by her brother (because Agnes herself did not have a seal) and by the abbot of the Teplá monastery.37 In 1283 Hartman of Holštejn bequeathed the entire village including the church, forests, and all its accessories to the monastery of St. Mary in Zábrdovice (southern Moravia, today part of Brno).38 The will was written by the scribe of the monastery and sealed by the testator. In both the previous cases, the will contains only the part of the testator’s property intended for the church institution and was clearly written in its interest. The existence of another testament, the last will of Časta ofKřelov,39 whose contents have not survived, is documented by a court dispute that in 1286 the daughters of Časta, through their husbands, initiated against the abbot of the monastery in Hradisko over the estates bequeathed by Časta to the monastery. After the last will was presented and three trustworthy witnesses swore to it, the husbands of the two daughters abandoned the suit, whichČasta’s daughters as well finally approved. A later legal dispute provides information about a portion of the last will of Hartleb of Dubno, a Moravian nobleman.
