the wills of the kings of portugal between the 12thand14thcenturies Two wills of SanchoII have survived to the present day.24 The first, undated but prior to the king’s marriage in 1241, repeats the structure of the wills of the previously mentioned kings: same title, samenarratio although without reference to children (the king did not have any), but with the clause referring to “in pace et tranquilitate”. Then comes a dispositioclause detailing the procedure of the succession to the throne if the king died without children. After this, we move on to the list of the donations. The will closes with a commission to the Supreme Pontifex, asking him, after the king’s death, to enforce the will and protect the royal family: Sancho II was removed from the governance of the kingdom. In Toledo, where he had retired, he drew up a second will, on January 3, 1248. The form no longer follows the tradition of the royal chancellery that we have seen. The invocation is Trinitarian (In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti, amen), followed by the notificatio in the form of notitia (Notum sit omnibus hanc paginam inspecturis, quod), the intitulatio, and the clauses “sana mentis”: “Ego Sancius secundus Dei gratia Rex Portugaliae”, and the expositio: SanchoII would die a few days after this act was written; it is called a testamentum, and ends with the date and the list of witnesses present.
