kirsi salonen 167 Abstract his articleconcerns the hereditary rights and the right to make last wills of clergymen in the medieval Kingdom of Sweden. The article first summarizes the inheritance regulations of the Catholic Church, then concentrates on the regulations governing the medieval Swedish Realm, and finally places into focus the situation in the diocese of Turku. The article introduces two Finnish cases related to the testamentary rights of clergymen: a petition presented to Pope Innocent VIII in 1488, made by the local bishop, cathedral chapter, and clergy of Turku to receive a licentia testandi; and a note concerning a contemporaneous attempt by Nicolaus Byskalle, canon of Turku, to bequeath his property. T 1 This contribution is based on an article and text edition I published together with Dr Aino Liira, University of Turku, Finland (Liira – Salonen 2023).
