peter erhart the West Frankish Monastery of Saint-Bertin (in today’s Département Pas-de-Calais) and its later copial charter tradition. The story of the monk Guntbert is well known to us from theGesta abbatum Sithiensium,written by Folkwin in the 10th century.28 Together with a charter, they reveal that Guntbert had already made a pilgrimage to Rome as a young boy together with his father Goibert in 826: his father had presented his son Guntbert to St Peter there and had him receive clerical orders from Pope Eugene II.29 But before the wealthy Goibert embarked on this uncertain adventure with his mother Ebertruda and his young son, he took precautions with regard to his property. He entrusted all his movables and real estate, his serfs and animals, to the two boni homines, Erwinus and Lothwinus, who had to watch over the execution of his arrangements. Thus, if he did not return from his pilgrimage, his property in Embry was to be donated to the Church of St Otmar as alms to be distributed to the poor. His estates in Cormont and Humbaldingahem with 20 unfree men were to be given to his son Guntbert as his inheritance if he returned in good health; if not, they were to be used to support the monks of SaintBertin.
