Donations offered before departure and on their way help us to reconstruct their itinerary to Rome with stops at the monasteries of St Gall and Pfäfers, leaving traces in their Libri vitae. This ‘tour d’horizon’, despite the sparse tradition of the early Middle Ages, shows that many such journeys to Rome inspired writing. These contracts were never referred to as ‘wills’, but were intended to prevent conflict over inheritance. 128 “Going to Rome: Much trouble, little gain!
