Axel Edelfeldt, The Governor (Landshövdingen), 1899. Oil on canvas, Tammerfors Art museum, Finland. The painting relates to a famous poem in the Finnish author Johan Ludvig Runeberg’s collection of poems with episodes from the Finnish War of 1808–1809, “The Tales of Ensign Stål”. The governor of Kuopio, Olof Wibelius, met with the commander of the Russian forces, count Fredrik Wilhelm von Buxhoevden, who told him Sweden had lost the war against Russia. With his hand firmly placed on the Swedish Code of 1734, Wibelius told the commander that the law will survive them both.
