the svea court of appeal in the early modern period 362 This seal was used well into the twentieth century.1062 Whether a new die was made at some point is not known, but the iconography is the same in any case. Seals on judgements were no longer used from the 1970s, but the court still keeps paper seals to be used, for example, on judgements to be sent abroad. A coat-of-arms with the same iconography as in 1818, i.e., with the scales in balance, is still (2014) used on every judgement but as a logotype. The smaller seals are approx. 2.8 cm in height, while the diameter of the great seals is 5.5 cm. In 1692, the then president of the Svea Court of Appeal, Count Gustaf Adolph De la Gardie (1647 – 1695) gave the court a silver box made by Johan Ulrik Kiekow for ballots.1063 The box was used for balloting in order to distribute cases between the judges. The sides are decorated with the coats-of-arms of the Kingdom of Sweden and of all provinces under the jurisdiction of the court: Upland, Södermanland, Västmanland, Dalecarlia, Närke, Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Gotland, Lapponia, Västerbotten, Medelpad, Ångermanland, Jämtland, Riga, Livonia, Reval and Estonia.1064 On the lid of the box are engravings with biblical quotations and in the middle the coat-of-arms of the court in a rendition resembling the seal of 1614 and surrounded with palm fronds.1065 At the 350-year jubilee in 1965, the court used a replica of the engraving on the ballot box as a symbol.1066 In summary: In 1614, the Svea Court of Appeal originally used a great seal with a shield, parted per pale, on the dexter a sword, on the sinister a län, Svea Court of Appeal, Svea Court of Appeal, Decision 19 Oct. 1818, on an application from the crofter Eric Jansson and his wife Anna Olsdotter of Tattarbo. 1062 E.g., Landsarkivet at Uppsala, Letters from the Svea Court of Appeal and other Courts of Appeal 1931 –50, D II a:13, Landskansliet, Uppsala län, Svea Court of Appeal, Decision 30 Nov. 1945 on appeal from the haulier Karl Egidius Leonard Karlsson. 1063 Petrén, Sture – Jägerskiöld, Stig – Nordberg, Tord O:son 1964 opposite p. 353; Kungl. The appearance of the coat-of-arms of Livonia is more surprising. 1065 See Kungl. Svea hovrätt 1614–1964 pp. 49-50. 1066 Petrén, Sture – Jägerskiöld, Stig – Nordberg, Tord O:son 1964; Kungl.
