insignia of independence – martin sunnqvist 361 compartment to the other. I have found some examples of this version from 1719 and 1721.1058 In the second version of the smaller seal, the coronets are there again, now one below the shield and two on the sides. The royal crown on top of the shield is kept, as are the palm fronds. There is no longer a compartment, but the palm fronds emerge from the coronet below the shield. The legend, still the same as in the old great seal, now begins and ends at the royal crown at the top of the seal. There is a rare example of this seal from 1820, when the advocate fiscal of the Svea Court of Appeal sent a letter to the Lord Lieutenant about unpaid fines.1059 There is reason to believe that this seal predates the new great seal of 1818, since the spelling of the legend and the unbalanced scales refer to the older great seal. The most recent impression of the old great seal which I have found is, as mentioned, from 20 August 1818.1060 A new great seal is used on a document of 19 October 1818.1061 The shield is, as in all the seals before, parted per pale, with a sword on the dexter and a pair of scales on the sinister. A significant change is that the scales are in balance. The shield is surrounded by three coronets, one below and one on either side of the shield, and it is surmounted by a royal crown. 1058 Landsarkivet at Uppsala, Letters from the Royal Majesty and other central authorities 1719 resp. 1721, Landskansliet, D I:148 resp.
