Bayer and Thomasius, and remarks that doctors Breithaupt and Franck are considered to be pietists. Helmstedt in turn is described as a mediocre town which had a renowned university, while Jena is mentioned as having very uncivilized students.937 Lovisin and his friend were also enthusiastic about seeing the “wonders of the world” that could be found in various places. They saw collections of diamonds, paintings, astronomical devices and even crocodiles on their journey. Finally, they also had the chance to meet important people such as Elector Frederick August I of Saxony (r. 1694 – 1733).938 All in all, Lovisin’s journey seems to be representative for a grand tour of a young nobleman at that time.939 When the court was founded in 1614 there was, quite naturally, no corps of lawyers just waiting to be recruited. The court had to make dowith what was available. The president of the court and the members of the first class were all Councillors of the Realm, which naturally has an effect on what careers we can expect to find within this group of judges. Four of these five men had also worked in diplomacy, and had often been a provincial judge (lagman) or amember of some extraordinary court as well.940 The experience these men had in legal matters stemmed from trials of exceptional character and of diplomatic negotiations, which often entailed legal problems.941 Even though three had been provincial judges and one a district court judge they probably did The Careers of the Judges: From Statesmen to Lawyers from well-travelled – marianne vasara-aaltonen 319 937 KB, M252:1, Erik Lovisins resedagbok, fols. 72, 147, 304-306, 314.
