from well-travelled – marianne vasara-aaltonen 317 Of all the Swedish men who were listed at the law faculty of Strassburg University, amajority studied there in the 1650s and 1660s. After that, the visits become more scattered with the last enrolment being in 1757.926 What is particularly interesting is that the special position of Greifswald, situated in Swedish Pomerania, is not reflected in the choices of the Svea judges at all. Only three (Stråle, Balingstadius, Oxenstierna) of all the judges examined here had studied there, and all of them decades before the Swedish occupation in 1631.927 This is surprising given that it was a popular foreign destination for the future lawyers studying at the Academy of Turku.928 Of course the sample here is limited, but still, compared to judges studying in Leiden (12), Wittenberg (7) and Strassburg (7), the almost complete absence of Greifswald-trained judges is striking. Looking at the 15 Swedish future lawyers from the Academy of Turku who had been in Greifswald, we also find only one who had been judge at an appeals court. These men opted instead for other positions in the state administration, town judiciaries and the military.929 The Swedes studying in Greifswald usually came from more modest backgrounds than those in Leiden, for instance. Niléhn uses this as an explanation of why they did not achieve high office.930 This is not a sufficient explanation, however, as it seems that Swedish students who had visited Greifswald did find work within the Swedish administration and judiciary, just not at the courts of appeal. A more plausible explanation is that, based on records of the Academy of Turku, future Swedish lawyers visited Greifswald mainly in the eighteenth century, a time at which the assessors of the Svea Court of Appeal no longer studied abroad in any large numbers.931 Similarly, Halle, which was popular among (P. Brahe, I. Nilsson Natt och Dag, P. Scheffer, J. Swebilius Adlerberg, J. Flach). The Strassburg records, however only lists one of those men. However, one of them even defended a legal dissertation in Strassburg, so it is possible that the Strassburg matriculation records are not complete. In addition, two judges (N. Bureus, B. Sparre) can be found in the matriculation records, which augments the information in Anjou (A. 1899) and the SBL; Die alten Matrikeln der Universität Straßburg, vol.1-3. 926 Die alten Matrikeln der Universität Straßburg, vol. 2. 927 Anjou, A. 1899; SBL; Ältere Universitäts-Matrikeln II, Universität Greifswald. 928 See Vasara, Marianne 2007; Pihlajamäki, Heikki 2007b. 929 http://www.helsinki.fi/ylioppilasmatrikkeli/hakutulos.php?select=2217 (last accessed on 5 July 2014). 930 Niléhn, Lars 1983b pp. 108-109. 931 This information is based on the research I am doing for my doctoral dissertation.
