As the only surviving child of Gustav II Adolf, Queen Christina came to the throne at the age of five, her father having been killed at the Battle of Lützen in 1632. Her regency government sat until 1644, when she started to reign. As queen, Christina was one of the first Swedish female judges until she abdicated in 1654, still unmarried, in order to convert to Catholicism. Her successor was her cousin Charles XGustav (1622 –1660). Painting by Sébastien Bourdon, Photo © Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. Christina, Queen of Sweden(1626 – 1689)
