a mostly german debate on conversion and salvation lightenment theology is clearly shown by his defence of the idea that the priests should not be present at executions.741 Johann August Nösselt, also professor of theology in Halle, also tried not to be extreme and was quite mild when he warned against the postponement of the conversion, but also expressed that the idea of the impossibility of the late conversion was wrong and would risk leading souls to a dangerous despair. For him both despair and certainty endangered the salvation.742 An anonymous article in the autumn of 1800 raised the impact of the execution on the populace. A major problem was that any impact given by the image of the condemned was damaging. Low-spirited and dejected, the condemned added to the pain of the educated and sensitive among the spectators, while a brave delinquent nurtured hero worship among the enthusiastic, who in the execution saw the death of a hero or a martyr.743 The idea of martyrdom thus emphasises the independence of the condemned and the execution from the government – in a situation where it reveals all its might, it loses the control it thought it had. In particular the problem was related to the women contemplating to murder a child.
