summary 363 study i i i The treatment model materialized in the National prison register The scope of this chapter is to investigate the National prison register in order to study the implementation of treatment in prison care. The study is an attempt to determine the actual results of the new ideas brought forth in the prison reform. The study includes 328files and the treatment model is studied in three different time periods. The first one is in 1938 when the register was introduced. The second is in 1943, as a control period. The final one is in 1947 after the reform was established. The prison register is described in detail in the thesis and illustrated with pictures.Aspects of research are systematically explained as to the methodological mode of procedure in the study. In this revised and expanded edition of the thesis new methodological developments has been included, primarily constructivist grounded theory based on the work of Kathy Charmaz. It must be emphasized that the intention is to clarify and substantiate the study of current methodological knowledge, while the outcome of the investigation are not affected. Five all-encompassing categories are utilized to explain the areas of research a) penalty, length of sentence, recidivism and release, b) special considerations concerning individual treatment, c) observation of the offenders by the personnel at the prisons, d) matters of discipline, and e) the prison system. The prison register was a creation of its time and it corresponded with the demands of the legislators. In spite of the shown transformations in prison care during the period of time the lack of an individual treatment in prison care is pointed out. Instead, the registers were used to label prisoners, which led to a diagnosis that preceded treatment. There are also examples in the files on biological aspects of race that are prejudicial towards the prisoners, making them appear as inferior. Demands for higher standard of living in the Swedish welfare state were looked upon as a guarantee for better preconditions with which to implement the philosophy of the reform. Instead, this period of time often has been looked upon at a time when the black coats transformed into white. In the research, the lack of implementation of individual prevention is pointed out. On the other hand, adjacent individual preventive proceedings are shown in the research, for example the detailed restrictions 8 a real i ty te st of i nd i v i dual t reatme nt i n p r i s on
