f äng e l s et s om vä l f ä rd s bygg e 356 This thesis is divided into three parts.The general aspects concerning the aim of the thesis is presented in the introductory chapter.The first part includes chapter 2-4.This part is intended to bring the Swedish prison system into its broad legal context and substantiate the three studies of the treatment model in the prison system.The second part, chapters 58, contains the core of the research.The rehabilitation model of prisoners in Sweden is investigated from the period of reform programs in the 1930s, until the Act of Correctional Treatment in Prison gained legal force at the end of the 1940s.The overall purpose is to relate political and legal matters to the actual treatment model in prisons and to evaluate an eventual reality gap between the ideal and the actual treatment in the prison at the entry of the 1945 Prison Reform. In the third part, chapters 9-10, an evaluation of the results is presented, this in order to find out if the intention of the reform and the actual outcome thereof corresponds or if there is a divergence. Finally, a concluding discussion on the specific preventive treatment model of the Swedish legal tradition in subsequent decades accomplishes the thesis. The chapters in this summary follow the structure of the thesis. Gunnar and Alva Myrdal’s opinions about social engineering and ideal human beings became widespread.Their work symbolised the modern welfare state and it outlined the direction for the Swedish state to abolish the class society and social poverty.
