the same form of party in Finnveden. Several heirs were found, not only in 10 per cent of the purchases but also as the one party in11per cent of the exchanges in Jämtland. The surprise in Finnveden was Nydala Monastery. The institution was involved in 43 per cent of all exchanges and purchased land in10per cent of the cases. The monastery was found, on the other hand, as the seller of land only once. What is also startling was the great difference between the women’s participation in the exchange transactions. The individual woman in Finnveden took part in some exchanges as the one party, while the Jämtland woman was never involved in exchange transactions other than those she carried out together with her husband. On the whole, an exceedingly small portion of individual women purchased land. The woman in Finnveden had much more property to administer than the woman in Jämtland. When she ended up in a situation where the husband was absent and the brother was no longer living, she could donate a gift in order to secure a place in the monastery’s nursing ward; she could sell real property to get access to money; or she could donate or sell together with her ageing husband. Quite simply, the woman in Finnveden was seen more often in the District Court than the woman in Jämtland. Her transactions, however, were very seldom aimed at the market. Rather, they concerned practically arranging her life or giving gifts for the spiritual care of close family members. The legal acquisitions show changes over time in both of my investigation regions. The sales carried out and the pledges (loans without interest) that were exhibited in Finnveden at the beginning of the period of investigation were aimed, foremost, at helping the person who found him or herself in a vulnerable situation and cannot be said to be aimed at the market, not even from the perspective of the purchaser or lender. The lender was a relative or Nydala Monastery.
