count of the intrinsic subjectivism, evaluative position, that his determination of the objective is based upon.45 Max Reischle’s (Werturteile und Glaubensurteile, 1900) philosophy is afflicted with the same problems as Münsterberg’s, and for similar reasons. According to Reischle’s theory, the creation of knowledge depends upon the premiss that it is actually possible to fit the given reality into a system of concepts and (natural) laws. However, this premiss is not so much a premiss as a supposition based upon the psychological idea that knowledge is valuable, which appears to force Reischle to assume that it is possible to order reality into a system of concepts and laws that in turn make objective knowledge feasible. For without the premiss that reality can fit into a system of concepts and (natural) laws we could not psychologically consider our epistemological goal as being accessible in any manner (or for that matter meaningful). At the same time, the value of knowledge forces us to assume that the epistemological target is accessible, which makes the theoretical accessibility of knowledge indistinguishable from the future value of knowledge. An additional, but decisive, problem of Reischle is his proposition in relation to the epistemologically intrinsic value of the premiss, which is only valid on condition it is also objectively valid in the psychological area, which is a state of affairs, according to Hägerström, that cannot to be taken for granted.46 And finally, according to Heinrich Maier (Psychologie des emotionalen Denkens, 1908), the truth value or validity of logical thought has its basis in the universal ethical necessity of logical thought (rather than the apodictic validity of the laws of thought).47 a ca l l f o r s c i e n t i f i c p u r i t y 255 45 Cf. ibid.
