have vested interests in them. Regardless of the aforementioned meaning, Hägerström argues that neither sentiment nor interest can constitute knowledge about real value properties in object, acts, or facts; subsequently, knowledge about objective values must be impossible.5 Hägerström’s theory holds that the relationship between a normative and a theoretical reality is decided by the fact that reality is a single and exclusive ontological category, which effectively denies that values can have reality existing in addition to theoretical reality.6 Hence, normative reality and theoretical reality cannot exist alongside one another. For any supposition of a normative reality context just as real as the theoretical reality context entails competition between two contexts of reality which both claim equal philosophical priority. But which context should take priority, value or reality? The answer is: “Thus that which is determined as real, when one regards value and the world of experience as together real, lacks determinateness.”7 Value-judgments are in reality merely expressions in which we assume or predicate an objective connection between, on the one hand, feelings, interests, and values, and on the other, things and facts, but not theoretical judgments.Value-judgments are in fact expressions only appearing to predicate a value’s objective attachment to a certain object or act, while in reality there exists no such objective connection between the value and the object.8 In addition to the purely normative judgment it must be added that Hägerström distinguished between intentions and theoretical p a r t i v, c h a p t e r 1 242 5 Hägerström, “Hägerström.”; “The Philosophy of Axel Hägerström.” 6 Hägerström, Selbstdarstellungen. 7 Hägerström, “Hägerström.”; “The Philosophy of Axel Hägerström.” Swedish: “Det, som bestämmes som realt, i det man fattar värdet och erfarenhetsvärlden somtillsammans verkliga, saknar sålunda bestämdhet.” 8 Hägerström, “Hägerström.”; “The Philosophy of Axel Hägerström.” 1. 1 the re lat ionshi p betwe en normat ive and theoret ical real i ty
