When Hägerström wrote Till analysen af det empiriska själfmedvetandet (1910), he did so in order to support his application for the post of the retiring professor of practical philosophy, Erik Olof Burman.98 However, fate intervened. The panel of experts pre-empted the application and unanimously invited Hägerström to succeed Burman.99 Due to this event, and Hägerström’s dissatisfaction with what he considered to be a somewhat hastily conceived book, he decided not to publish.Twenty years later, when writing Selbstdarstellungen (1929), Hägerström re-read the unpublished manuscript and discovered that he still agreed with the general ideas expressed in it, if not with the exact wording.100 Unfortunately, there exists no exact information specifying which these general ideas and exact words were, but if it is true that Hägerström had not changed his general ideas, then this book will probably help us to establish some of the leading principles of Hägerström’s philosophy. The theoretical aim of writing Till analysen af det empiriska själfmedvetandet was the analysis of the concept of the so-called empirical self-consciousness.The general design of the work is laid p a r t i i i 200 Case Study: Till analysen af det empiriska själfmedvetandet - Anti-subjectivism and Critique of Idealism chap te r 3 98 Fries,“Förord,” inTill analysen af det empiriska själfmedvetandet: En psykologisk och filosofisk undersökning. 99 Broad, “Memoir of Axel Hägerström,” in Philosophy and Religion, pp. 25-26. 100 Fries,“Förord.” InSelbstdarstellungen Hägerström lists Till analysen af det empiriska själfmedvetandet as one of his most important books.
