in Das Prinzip der Wissenschaft where being non-contradictory did not constitute a sufficient condition for an object or concept’s specific reality.212 An additional argument undermining the theory of Das Prinzip derWissenschaft is Hägerström’s observation in Selbstdarstellungen that the determinateness of a specific concept is not a priori affected by that same concept’s own relationship to the determinateness of other concepts, and consequently the first concept’s reality per se is therefore neither affected by nor dependent upon other concepts when it comes to determining the first concept’s own reality - which, however, the requirement of demarcation in Das Prinzip derWissenschaft implied and actually necessitated. A concept’s reality (or determinateness) in relationship to other real (or determinate) concepts is therefore, according to Selbstdarstellungen, a question that is answered a posteriori rather than a priori. Hence, the only thing predetermined for a determinate (real) concept, according toSelbstdarstellungen, is only the concept’s own self-identity, but not the reality of other concepts.213 In Selbstdarstellungen, the determinateness of concepts (abstract or concrete) is treated and determined in a manner analogous to that of the determinateness of objects. The determinateness of a concept does not presuppose the concept’s relationship to other concepts neither does a concept’s actual relationship to other concepts have any effect upon the concept’s own determinateness.214 Or has Marc-Wogau writes, Hägerström often argued that the reality of genus does not increase due to it being thought of in species.215 The refinement of the conceptual analysis performed inSelbstdarstellungen has implications for the determination of scientific character, insofar as it makes a distinction between formal valia ca l l f o r s c i e n t i f i c p u r i t y 101 212 Ibid., pp. 53-64. 213 Ibid. 214 Hägerström,Selbstdarstellungen, p.15.
