421 Russians made use of this Swedish prototype. Delo 18 in this collection contains a long memorandum submitted to the kollcgiia inostrannykh del on February 21, 1721 by Heinrich Pick about how young Swedish noblemen were raised and about how they were used in the colleges. I have also had the opportunity to study Pick’s detailed description of the Swedish kanslikollegium from 1718, as well as a Swedish copy of that college’s personnel budget for 1715, both of which are to be found in fond 96, “Snosheniia Rossii so Shvetsiei” (“Russia’s Relations with Sweden”). Fond 342—Komissiia o sochinenii novogo ulozheniia (The Commission for the Drafting of a New Code of Laws) A commission on the laws was appointed in 1720 and charged with drawing up a new legal code for Russia on the basis of Swedish and Danish law. I was fortunate enough to have complete access to this collection of documents, which enable the researcher to follow the work of the commission in great detail and to determine the degree of influence of foreign prototypes with a high degree of exactitude. The Swedish materials used by the commission were Kristoffers landslag, the town law, and Schmedeman’s collection of Swedish statutes published in 1706.
